A painter and sculptor, Raffi Musakhanyan received his Fine Arts degree from the Yerevan Khatchatur Abovyan University (YKAU) in Armenia. After moving his family to Los Angeles in 1988, Raffi’s work took on a new dynamic.

Flourishing especially in the last decade, his mixed-media textural paintings portray earth-toned layers of paint. Contrasted by subtle planes of pale gold metallic. He creates a depth and a contrast between matte and luster, with highly textured borders to distinguish his technique. Raffi presents a surreal world through symbolism and the recurrent use of recognizable imagery. He intends the viewer to see strength and positivity through the pain and struggles that may be portrayed. He says, “Symbols are very simple yet powerful tools. I use them to elicit, develop, or complete an idea or feeling.”

Raffi’s bronze sculptures range from the powerful to the poetic, through visually strange creatures and graceful figures. They are strong, yet gently moving, and a tribute to the power of passion.

Raffi currently works both in his studio in Los Angeles, CA, and Yerevan, Armenia.
